Soundfly welcomes new voices each month to offer unique perspectives, shine a light on unexpected musical worlds, and help our readers find their sound.
At a time where we have access to all this music, the experience should be amazing. Genres play a big part in that. Identifying what genre each individual song belongs to helps us identify songs with a similar “vibe.” Today, classification of songs is still a manual process. With 20,000 new songs being added to streaming services every day, it’s a very big problem that’s only getting bigger.
First, create a list of small, reasonable venues to reach out to, and then write down the names and email addresses for the people who book music for those places (virtually all venues now book talent through email). Instead of putting all your booking hopes in one basket, writing down multiple venue options will give you the best chance at booking shows. Again, instead of focusing on the best local venues, you’ll need to start building your reputation anywhere you can.

Don’t make the mistake of running a crowdfunding campaign with little or no planning. Take the time to put these 6 things in place, and you’ll succeed.
Lenders may well ask for a signed letter from your CPA stating that you’re in business and making money. Again, this is something that builds confidence in your ability to pay back the loan, and they’re hearing it from a third party who has a good reputation and a stable career.
One thing you might have noticed is that we haven’t seen a ton of instrumental music so far. As previously stated, it’s not always as easy to identify a verse and chorus in instrumental music, so thinking in terms of Section A and B can be more useful. But given that, there’s really no limit on what sort of structures you might see:
A few oddballs and nerds have explored tuning systems that use bigger prime numbers to generate finer pure intervals. Harry Partch used the primes up to 11 to make a tuning system that divides up the octave into 43 pure parts rather than 12 impure ones. You can try the Partch scale using the Wilsonic app or Audiokit Synth One. It’s extremely strange! But, I guess, it’s strange in a pure way?
[AC]: “That’s fundamentally the trouble of trying to apply specific scientific experiments to songs. The whole idea of scientific experiments is to try to control as many things as possible, and sometimes that ends up happening by stripping away some of the things that happen in real life: like lyrics, like meter, and so on. And now you have this song, which has all these extra things that are not part of music cognition experiments — anything you say that the scientific experiments might predict are confounded by the fact that in real life, there are all these other things that weren’t part of the experiment.”

If you need it for when you finally get around to starting that ’90s throwback stoner metal project, it’s fine to save it for a rainy day. But if there’s nothing on the horizon where it would be useful it’s probably not doing you much good.

That was the beginning of my journey toward understanding the complexity of audio work and, more specifically, about the role of mastering in the recording process. Having performed music live for years and having dabbled in the studio, I understood that both used mixing; but I had never heard of mastering. How is it different than mixing? Why is it needed? Why didn’t my mixing engineer just do that work for us? I went looking for the answers.
“I have a fictitious person I write for. And she’s called Doris, and she’s from Bradford and she wears a raincoat and she has two horrible little kids that are giving her nothing but grief. And you know, the man left her a while back. And she just, in the rain, everyday, trudges to work and she works hard.”
Both the principle producer, Tarik “Cilvaringz” Azzougarh, and the group have gone to great lengths to make sure no leaks are possible. Firstly, and courageously, they recorded everyone’s tracks to bpm-synced substitute beats (the performers hadn’t even heard the final beats until the record was mixed), deleted the source tracks and final mixes from all known hard-drives, and hid the album in a number of secure institutional locations around the world.
